Insider attack kills four police in S. Afghanistan

Armed attack by police on their colleagues in Taliban former stronghold the southern Kandahar province with Kandahar city as its capital 450 km south of Kabul claimed the lives of four police personnel, provincial government spokesman Samim Khapalwak said Monday.

"Two local policemen believed to be Taliban infiltrated elements opened fire on their colleagues inside a checkpoint in Koka Kariz area of Miwand district in the wee hours of Monday, leaving four local police personnel dead," Khapalwak told reporters here.

Investigation has been initiated into the case, the official said, adding more details will be made public after completion of investigation.

Meanwhile, Qari Yusuf Ahmadi, who claims to speak for the Taliban outfit in contact with media outlets, insisted that Taliban penetrated elements conducted the attack killing seven local police personnel.

Local police or community police are security personnel recruited by government to ensure peace and stability in far-flung villages.
