Nigerian troops are now in full control of northeast Bama town in Borno State, after clearing terrorists from the town on Monday, the country's defense headquarters said.

In a tweet monitored by Xinhua in Lagos, Nigeria's economic hub, the military authority said "Nigerian troops have this afternoon routed terrorists from Bama in Borno state.

It added that mopping up operation is ongoing.

Bama is the second largest town in Borno after Maiduguri, the state capital.

Chris Olukolade, spokesperson for Nigeria's defense headquarters, said the Chadian partners in the Multinational Joint Task Force have been mandated to undertake a pursuit of the terrorists who are believed to be heading for the borders after being dislodged from Bama. The military spokesperson told Xinhua that the comprehensive offensive aimed at clearing the terrorists from all parts of the mission area is continuing with coordinated air strikes on identified terrorists hideouts and enclaves along with ground assaults.

Nigerian troops have routed terrorists from different towns and communities in northeast Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states in the last few weeks.

With the massive military operations, the troops have also recovered several sophisticated weapons from the terrorists.
