Two civilians were killed and two others injured as an explosive device went off in the eastern Afghan province of Khost Sunday night, deputy to provincial police chief Mohammad Yaqub said Monday.

"A bomb blast planted by militants outside a mosque in the provincial capital of Khost city Sunday night claimed the lives of two persons, including a prayer leader, and injured two others," Yaqub told reporters.

All the victims were civilians, the official asserted.

The official blamed the enemies of peace, a reference to the armed Taliban, for staging the deadly attack. However, the Taliban has yet to claim responsibility.

Civilians routinely bear the brunt of conflicts in Afghanistan as nearly 3,700 Afghan civilians had been killed and more than 6, 800 others wounded in Taliban-led militancy in 2014, according to a report released by a UN mission last month.
