At least three British nationals died in the Germanwings disaster, British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said Wednesday.

The Airbus A320 aircraft, operated by Lufthansa's budget airline Germanwings, crashed Tuesday in southern France en route from Spain's Barcelona to Germany's Dusseldorf.

No survivors were expected among the 144 passengers and six crew members on board.

Hammond confirmed on Tuesday evening that some British nationals were "sadly likely" on board the ill-fated passenger jet.

"We are providing consular assistance and will give further help as more information becomes available. We are working closely with the French, German and Spanish authorities, and the airline, to establish the facts," he said in a statement.

The foreign secretary added that Britain's Air Accident Investigation Branch and Disaster Victim Identification experts are standing by to offer assistance to the French authorities, if required.
