The UN Security Council on Friday condemned "in the strongest terms" the terrorist attack claimed by the Islamic State (IS) at a Shiite mosque in Qatif, eastern Saudi Arabia.

The bomb attack that targeted "Imam Ali" Mosque in Qudaih area of the Saudi city of Qatif killed at least 21 people and injured 66 Shiite worshipers.

In a press statement released here, the council underlined the need to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these "reprehensible" acts of terrorism to justice, according to the statement.

"The members of the Security Council stressed again that IS must be defeated and that the intolerance, violence and hatred it espouses must be stamped out," said the statement.

"The members of the Security Council reminded States that they must ensure that measures taken to combat terrorism comply with all their obligations under international law, in particular international human rights, refugee and humanitarian law," said the statement.
