The three teenagers killed in an explosion in central France on Saturday likely lost the control of a chemical product mixture they were making, which provoked the explosion, local media reported on Sunday.

Speaking to news channel BFMTV, local Deputy Prosecutor Yves Dubuy said investigations revealed "significant traces of acetone and hydrochloric acid" on the spot and a weapon used for soft air games.

"The assumption of a loss of control over a chemical compound is studied," Dubuy added.

On Saturday afternoon, an explosion hit an abandoned house at Ranchevoux in Bas-en-Basset in central France, killing three teenagers aged 14 to 16.

A fourth victim was seriously wounded, the report added.
