Ukraine's parliament speaker stresses importance of decentralization

Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Groysman on Monday stressed the importance of decentralization of power for the country's development.
"Decentralization is a key reform that would allow building a proper administrative system in the country, which is vital for successful implementation of reforms in various sectors," Groysman told a forum on Ukraine's regional development in the southern city of Odessa.
He noted that decentralization reform, which was launched in Ukraine at the beginning of this year, has already helped promote economic development of the regions, expanding local budgets of small municipal communities by 40 percent.
The successful implementation of the reform will further strengthen autonomy of local governments, giving the regions more opportunities for growth, Groysman said.
Decentralization reform, which is scheduled to be completed by October, has been one of the key demands voiced by independence-seeking protesters in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk and Lugansk regions.
