Austrian police have found 34 kg of heroin and opium in a truck during a routine inspection in Vienna on Thursday evening, local media reported on Friday.

The truck, which had come from Iran and driven by a 44-year-old Iranian national, was carrying washing machines, dish washers, and other household appliances, though sniffer dogs were able to detect the presence of the hidden drugs.

Police spokesperson Thomas Keiblinger said the incident was a "large drug find," particularly given that the drugs are usually doubled in amount by way of a cutting agent before being sold to consumers.

He said the street value of the seized drug would thus be at least three million euros (3.3 million U.S. dollars).

The driver of the vehicle has up to now remained silent. Police have impounded the vehicle, and are presently examining the freight papers of the transported goods in order to determine both an origin and planned destination.
