The president of Columbia University suggested on Monday U.S. President Barack Obama would return to his alma mater after leaving office in 2017, said a newspaper of the University.

During an event Monday afternoon, Lee Bollinger, president of the university, said Columbia was looking forward to hosting the president in 2017, according to the official student newspaper Columbia Daily Spectator.

However, Bollinger did not provide further details about what sort of role Obama, a 1983 grad, would have on campus.

Relations between Obama and Columbia University was tested earlier this year after Columbia University lost to the University of Chicago in its bid to house Obama's presidential library and museum.

Obama taught law at the University of Chicago before being elected to the Senate in 2004.
