Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday that he believes the U.S. can work with Israel to make sure Iran abide by the nuclear deal which he had opposed.

"Despite our disagreement over the nuclear deal with Iran, I believe that America and Israel can and should work together now to ensure that Iran complies with the deal," Netanyahu told an assembly of the Jewish Federations of North America.

The U.S. and Israel have been at odds over the deal that world powers reached with Tehran in July. Netanyahu objected to the deal and called it a "historic mistake" that threatens Israel's security.

Netanyahu said the past year "had not been simple", and was one of high diplomatic stakes and high passions but now a decision had been made that it was important to work together.

He said the U.S. and Israel can find no better friend than each other.

The Israeli leader also said his meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama on Monday was "very good," and he praised the U.S. president for his commitment to the "unshakeable alliance" between the two countries.

Netanyahu and Obama have had a chilly relationship over the years, and the meeting is meant in part to repair ties after repeated clashes over the nuclear deal with Iran.

U.S. media said that Netanyahu's Tuesday comments underscored the prime minister's efforts to turn the page on the bitter division with the White House over the issue.
