Syria on Wednesday vehemently condemned the terror bombing that caused a Russian passenger jet to crash over Egypt earlier this month, state news agency SANA reported.

"Syria strongly denounces the cowered, criminal and terrorist attack that targeted a Russian civilian airplane over Egypt's Sinai region that claimed the lives of civilians who were onboard," the Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry stressed the Syrian government's readiness to fully cooperate with the Russian authorities to haunt down the criminal perpetrators and punish them.

The ministry, meanwhile, blamed the expansion of the terrorist groups like the Islamic State (IS) group and the al-Qaida-linked Nusra Front on the "wrong policies of the United States and the West, which offered all kinds of support to the terrorist groups through its tools in Turkey, Saudi Arabia and others to serve its scheme to wreak havoc in the region."

The ministry also warned of the impending threats of terrorism on the peace and stability in the world, noting that no country is immune to terrorism.

Syria calls for concerting all international efforts to eliminate terrorism in accordance to the related UN Security Council resolutions, the ministry demanded.

The Syrian condemnation came just a day after the Russian government, for the first time, acknowledged that a bomb had destroyed a Russian charter jet that crashed more than two weeks ago over Egypt.

The IS group claimed responsibility for bombing the Russian jetliner, saying it's a retaliation against the Russian airstrikes that have been targeting the IS militants in Syria since late September this year.
