India on Friday successfully testfired an indigenous, surface-to-surface, nuclear-capable Agni I missile from a military base off the coast of its eastern Odisha state, sources said.

"The missile was testfired from the Integrated Test Range of the Abdul Kalam Island off Odisha coast as part of strategic forces command training exercise. The testfiring was successful," the sources said.

The missile, which has a strike range of nearly 700 km, can carry nuclear warheads of up to 1,000 kg. It is 15 metres long and powered by solid and liquid propellants.

Agni I was first launched in 2002 and the last testfiring was carried out in September last year, which was successful.

The testfiring of the missile came a day after India testfired another home-made, nuclear-capable missile, Prithvi II, from the same base.
