At least six people, including three Al-Shabaab militants, were killed and several others injured on Monday in a heavy fighting between the government forces and Al-Qaida allied network in southern Somalia, military said.

General Mohamud Mohamed Saney, National Army Commander based in Lower Shabelle region, said the fighting took place at the regions's Warmahan neighborhood early Monday, and the national forces overpowered the Al-Shabaab militants.

"The operation ended successfully, we are controlling the area now. However, we lost three soldiers, three others wounded. They ran away with three dead bodies," he told Xinhua by telephone.

Warmahan is some 60 kilometers to the south of the Somali capital Mogadishu.

However, Al-Shabaab claimed they captured the neighbourhood and killed large number of soldiers on spot.
