Egypt's affiliate of the Islamic State (IS) announced on Friday that its members carried out an armed attack on tourist hotel on Thursday.

The group cited the attack that targeted Israeli tourists in response to a call by the group's leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi to target Jews everywhere.

The IS members used light arms in the attack, the group said in a statement released on its twitter page.

A group of youths hurled fireworks and fired birdshot at police guarding a hotel near Cairo's pyramids Thursday.

The hotel was accommodating some Arab Israelis. No one was injured during the attack.

The Interior Ministry said unknown assailants had gathered outside the hotel to target the police guarding the hotel.

Egypt has witnessed a growing wave of anti-security attacks in revenge for the crackdown on Islamists after the army-led ouster of President Mohamed Morsi in 2013.
