The Islamic State (IS) militants executed three female employees who worked previously with the Independent High Electoral Commission of Iraq (IHEC) in the IS-held city of Mosul, the commission said on Thursday.

The extremist IS militants executed the three women with bullets publicly in the city of Mosul, some 400 km north of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, after the militants arrested them from their homes, the commission said in a statement.

The commission "condemns this cowardly act and demands official authorities to denounce such act and work to rid the Iraqi people from those criminal killers through the liberation of the areas captured by these gangs," the statement said.

IS extremist group frequently executed civilians, government employees and ex-security members in its stronghold of Mosul.

The mass execution included dozens of IHEC former employees, who are accused by the group of being "apostates." Some of the slain people were reported to be women.
