The Pentagon said Monday U.S. carried out a drone strike on a training camp of al-Shabaab, an al-Qaida-affiliated group in Somalia, over the weekend, killing more than 150 fighters of the extremist group.

"The fighters were there training and were training for a large-scale attack," said Pentagon spokesman Jeff Davis here, citing initial assessments of the airstrike' effect as saying.

According to Davis, the airstrike took place Saturday on the training camp 120 about 193 kilometers north of Mogadishu, the largest city in Somalia.

"We know they were going to be departing the camp and they posed an imminent threat to US and (African Union) forces," said Davis.

Al-Shabaab, an extremist group, is responsible for dozens of attacks in east Africa, particularly Kenya.
