The Ukrainian parliament Tuesday approved the long-pending resignation of the country's Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin with 289 votes, meeting the required minimum benchmark of 226 votes, according to its website statement.

Shokin's resignation was undecided for more than a month as the parliament, which lost its legislative majority in mid-February after a crackdown of the ruling coalition, lacked enough votes to oust the prosecutor general.

On Feb. 19, Shokin wrote an official resignation letter after being asked by President Petro Poroshenko to quit due to his low credibility, to which the 63-year-old prosecutor general did not respond publicly.

Poroshenko's decision to replace the prosecutor general came amid public allegations that Shokin had blocked the investigation of corruption cases against high-ranking officials and interrupted the implementation of a justice system reform.

Shokin was appointed Ukraine's prosecutor general in February 2015.
