In March and April 2016, following the attacks in the Belgian capital, including one at the Brussels-based airport, there have been 1,432,387 fewer passengers passing through Zaventem.

According to La Derniere Heure, it is mostly Asians and Americans who most reluctant to use the airport.

Before the attacks on March 22, the airport recorded increased growth in passenger traffic of 7.5 percent in January, 11 percent in February, and 7.3 percent from March 1 to 21, compared to 2015 figures. Following the attacks, a decrease of 29.1 percent was recorded at the end of March.

Despite the partial resumption of activity in April, passenger traffic at the airport fell by 46.5 percent.

The overall balance of the airport is negative in the first four months of 2016: -16 percent compared to the same period in 2015.

Brussels Airlines, Belgian flagship airline based at Brussels Airport, has in turn recorded a decrease of 16.9 percent compared to same period in 2015.
