Thousands trapped between Syria, Jordan in need of assistance

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) warned Wednesday that tens of thousands of Syrians, who have taken refuge in the desert border area between Syria and Jordan, are facing pressing humanitarian needs amid a deteriorating security situation.
"The crisis at the berm (refugee camping areas) reflects an international failure to protect and help people affected by conflict and who are in desperate need," said ICRC's regional director for Near and Middle East Robert Mardini in a statement.
"The circumstances people are living in right now are unacceptable. Only immediate and concerted international action will relieve their plight," he added.
Many living in refugee camps are women and children who have fled Syria to escape ongoing violence and insecurity.
The berm was declared a closed military zone after a car bomb hit a military post near the Rukban crossing on June 21.
This has severely hampered the ability of aid organizations to provide life-saving assistance to refugees trapped in the location.
"Until a real and sustainable solution is found for the thousands of families trapped at the berm, immediate measures must be taken to ensure they can receive protection and assistance in a safe environment," Mardini said.
"Priority attention must be given to the most vulnerable, including urgent medical cases, pregnant women and infants, and unaccompanied minors," he added.
