A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake jolted off New Zealand early Friday, the GeoNet said.

The quake, which occurred at 4:37 a.m. local time (1637 GMT Thursday), was centered 130 km northeast of Te Araroa in the North Island with a depth of 55 km, according to the GeoNet.

The U.S. Geological Survey initially put the magnitude of the quake at 7.2, but later revised it down to 7.1 with a depth of 19.0 km.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said small tsunami waves had been observed, but it did not issue a warning.
