6.1 magnitude quake hits central Indonesia

An earthquake of 6.1 magnitude jolted North Sulawesi province of central Indonesia on Thursday but there was not potential for tsunami, an official from the meteorology and geophysics agency said.

The quake hit at 15 :17 p.m. Jakarta time (0817 GMT), the official said.

"We did not issue a warning for tsunami for this quake," the official told Xinhua via phone.

Indonesia is prone to quakes as it lies on a vulnerable quake-hit zone the so called "the Pacific Ring of Fire."
