M5.0 quake hits NE Japan: weather agency

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.0 struck northeastern Japan on Saturday, said the weather agency.

The 10:40 p.m. (1340 GMT) quake registered 3 on the Japanese seismic scale of 7 in southern parts of Akita Prefecture, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The epicenter of the quake was at a latitude of 39.8 degrees north and a longitude of 140.8 degrees east and occurred at depth of 150 km, said the weather agency.

The jolt, centered in the Akita, also shook other northeastern Japanese prefectures including Aomori, Iwate and Miyagi.

So far no major damage or injuries were reported and no tsunami warning was issued.
