A 5.0-magnitude earthquake hit India's northern state of Haryana early Friday, officials said.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the earthquake occurred at 4:25 a.m. local time (2255 GMT Thursday).

"The epicentre of earthquake was Rohtak district of Haryana located at 28.8 degrees north latitude and 76.2 degrees east longitude," the department said in a statement. "The depth of the earthquake was 22 km."

Rudraprayag is about 65 km northwest of the Indian capital of New Delhi.

Apart from Haryana, the earthquake was felt in New Delhi and areas falling under National Capital Region (NCR).

Reports said panic-stricken people rushed out of buildings and gathered in the streets in some areas.

So far there were no reports of any damage or loss of lives in the earthquake.

In 2015 a powerful earthquake struck India's neighboring country Nepal, causing large scale destruction and killing over 5,000 people.
