Spanish High Court judge Carmen Lamela on Monday night ordered to send the leader of the Catalan National Assembly (ANC) Jordi Sanchez and the leader of Omnium Cultural Jordi Cuixat into prison without bail while charges of sedition against them are being investigated.

The sedition charges relate to events in Barcelona on Sept. 20, with the pair being accused of organizing a demonstration outside the offices of the Catalan economy ministry in Barcelona.

The demonstration meant Civil Guards were unable to leave the building for hours, while their vehicles suffered some damage as they arrested Catalan Economy Secretary Josep Maria Jove for his supposed role in helping organize the Oct. 1 independence referendum in the region, which had been ruled illegal by the Spanish Constitutional Court.

Omnium is a pro-Catalan independence movement which promotes Catalan culture and language.

Earlier Monday, the judge rejected the appeal of the Spanish State Prosecutor to apply the same action against the chief of the Catalan regional police force (Mossos de Esquadra), Josep Lluis Trapero, who is also being investigated for sedition.

Judge Lamela said that for the moment, there was not enough evidence to link Trapero to such a charge and left him and Mossos' Superintendent, Teresa Laplana, in conditional freedom, although both will have to surrender their passports and report to a judge every fortnight.
