If the International Energy Agency (IEA) and China cooperate closely, the world benefits, the IEA head has said during the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Bonn, Germany.

"China is definitely a leader when it comes to clean energy revolution. China is now No. 1 in solar power, No. 1 in wind energy, No. 1 in nuclear energy, No. 1 in energy efficiency, No. 1 in electric cars, and many other clean technologies are leading the game," said Executive Director Dr. Fatih Birol, speaking during a high-level event at the China Pavilion on Nov. 16.

"When we look at the future of China, we believe if China changes, the world changes," he said.

The IEA recently released its annual report, "World Energy Outlook", with a major focus on China this year.

It said that, with the change of Chinese economic priorities, moving from an energy-heavy industrial economy to a light economy, bolstered by the new energy strategy endorsed by Chinese President Xi Jinping's recent historic report to the 19th CPC National Congress last month, the Chinese energy mix will change significantly with deep implications for the international energy system.

Xie Zhenhua, China's special representative on climate change, suggested the IEA cooperate with China to build carbon trading market in the country. Dr. Birol said the organization would be very happy to accept the suggestion and would provide support in designing a carbon trading mechanism.

The trade volume of emissions from the energy sector takes up a large part of the quota within the carbon trading market, and this would enhance the transition process in production and consumption of energy, said Xie.

The IEA, which is strongly promoting an energy transition in the world, can get what they want from their endeavour in China with the country's help in regards to technology, energy structural improvement and the launching of the carbon trading market, Xie added.
