Romania's last King Mihai I dies at 96

Romania's former King Mihai I died on Tuesday at the age of 96 at his residence in Switzerland, the Romanian Royal House announced in a statement.

Princess Maria stood at Mihai I's bedside until the latter's death, according to the statement.

On Nov. 8, the Royal House announced that King Mihai was in suffering.

Crown Princess Margareta will make a statement to the country later on Tuesday and on Wednesday the details of ex-King Mihai I's funeral will be unveiled, according to the Romanian Royal House.

Mihai I ruled as King of Romania from July 20 of 1927 to June 8 of 1930 and again from Sept. 6 of 1940 until his abdication on Dec.30 of 1947, when Romania was proclaimed the Romanian People's Republic.
