China resolutely opposes U.S. arms sales to Taiwan and has lodged solemn representations to the United States, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Thursday.

Spokesperson Zhao Lijian made the remarks at a routine press conference when responding to a question that U.S. government has notified Congress of a possible sale of advanced torpedoes worth 180 million U.S. dollars to Taiwan.

Zhao said that China urges the United States to earnestly abide by the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, stop arms sales to and military ties with Taiwan to avoid further damage to China-U.S. relations and cross-Straits peace and stability.
