JAKARTA, May 7 (Xinhua) -- The Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries plans to establish 200,000 hectares of new marine conservation areas this year to enhance marine resilience, preserve the environment, and support economic growth, a senior official said on Wednesday.

The ministry is committed to strengthening blue carbon management and improving the effectiveness of conservation area management, said Kartika Listriana, director general of Marine Spatial Planning at the ministry.

"We will set up 200,000 hectares of new marine conservation areas in 2025," the director announced during a press conference.

Listriana explained that the plan aligns with sustainable marine spatial planning.

"Integration of marine spatial planning is essential to ensure that marine utilization is conducted in a responsible, sustainable, and fair manner for all parties, including coastal communities and the next generation," she noted.

Previously, the ministry reported that Indonesia's conservation areas reached 29.9 million hectares last year. Enditem
