S. Korea's employment rises 194,000 on year in April

SEOUL, May 14 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's employment rose for the fourth straight month in April, mainly due to the elderly job increase, statistical office data showed Wednesday.

The number of employed people aged 15 and older gained 194,000, or 0.7 percent, over the year to 28,887,000 in April, keeping an upward trend since January, according to Statistics Korea.

The overall job growth was driven by the elderly. The number of jobs for those aged 60 and older expanded by 340,000 in April on a yearly basis, and the figure for those in their 30s grew by 93,000.

Employment among those aged 15-29 decreased by 174,000, while jobs for those in their 40s and 50s decreased by 51,000 and 14,000 each.

Employment among manufacturers plunged 124,000 in April compared with the same month of last year, marking the lowest in over six years since February 2019 and keeping a downward trend for the 10th successive month.

Jobs lost in the construction and the wholesale and retail industries reached 150,000 and 3,000 each, continuing to go down for the 12th and the 14th consecutive month, respectively.

The number of jobs in the health and social welfare service, the science and technology service, and the information and communication sectors picked up 218,000, 113,000 and 72,000 each.

The number of unemployed people was 854,000 in April, down 31,000 from a year earlier. Unemployment rate fell 0.1 percentage point to 2.9 percent. Enditem
