KABUL, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Personnel of Afghan law enforcing agencies have discovered over 350 kg of illicit drugs, including 10 kg of heroin, 16 kg of opium poppy, and 330 kg of materials used in manufacturing heroin in the western Herat province, a statement of the national army in the province said Wednesday.
The alleged smugglers were attempting to take the contraband out of Afghanistan illegally, the statement said without providing more details.
Afghan police have also thwarted attempts to smuggle illegal drugs outside the war-torn country and discovered 7 kg of heroin and 17 kg of methamphetamine over the past week.
The Afghan interim government has vowed to fight against poppy cultivation, processing into drugs and drug trafficking until the once-poppy-growing country gets rid of the drug menace. Enditem
