JAKARTA, May 15 (Xinhua) -- The Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries has implemented a Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) to support the sustainability of the country's marine ecosystem, a senior official said on Thursday.

Pung Nugroho Saksono, director general of Marine Resources and Fisheries Supervision at the ministry, stated that the technology helps maintain the sustainability of fish resources, which is essential for preserving the balance of the marine ecosystem.

"This system is considered crucial as part of the implementation of measured fishing catches," he said.

The official explained that the VMS device enables real-time monitoring of fishing vessel movements, aiding efforts to curb illegal fishing activities.

"And (it helps) optimize the management of fish stocks threatened by overfishing," he added.

Lotharia Latif, acting director general of Capture Fisheries at the ministry, noted that the data on fishing vessel movements recorded through VMS can be used to enforce measured fishing catches, ensuring that fishing activities occur only in designated areas. Enditem
