KHARTOUM, May 20 (Xinhua) -- The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) on Tuesday declared Khartoum State free of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), ending the group's presence in the state after more than two years.

In a statement, the SAF announced that Khartoum purged of the "rebels and their supporters."

The SAF also vowed to continue military operations until all remaining areas under RSF control are fully reclaimed.

The army's announcement came after days of intense fighting in southwestern Omdurman, the RSF's last stronghold in Khartoum State.

For more than two months, heavy clashes raged around the Al-Salha and Al-Jamoiya areas of Omdurman, which became key RSF positions following the group's withdrawal from most of the state in late March.

Earlier in the day, the SAF said in a statement that it had been engaged in large-scale battles with the RSF since Monday in western and southern Omdurman city, advancing to clear the Al-Salha area and its surroundings.

So far, the RSF has not issued any comment on the SAF's announcement.

Sudan has been engulfed in a brutal conflict between the SAF and the RSF since April 2023. The war has killed tens of thousands and forced millions to flee their homes, both within Sudan and across its borders. Enditem
