SEOUL, May 21 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's industrial accident deaths slightly fell in the first quarter thanks to tougher punishment for serious accidents, government data showed Wednesday.
The number of deaths, caused by industrial accidents, came to 137 in the January-March quarter, down 0.7 percent year-on-year, according to the Ministry of Employment and Labor.
The decrease was attributable to the positive effect of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act, which came into force in January 2022 to impose imprisonment or fine on employers who fail to prevent grave accidents at workplaces.
The number of industrial accident deaths in the construction industry advanced 10.9 percent over the year to 71 in the first quarter, but the reading in the manufacturing industry retreated 6.5 percent to 29.
The figure in other industries dropped 14.0 percent to 37 in the cited quarter.
The number of deaths at workplaces with fewer than 50 full-time workers increased 6.4 percent to 83, but the figure for workplaces with more than 50 full-time employees reduced 10.0 percent to 54. Enditem
