VIENTIANE, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Lao Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Linkham Douangsavanh has called on all citizens to protect the nation's forest resources, emphasizing the importance of conserving, developing, and utilizing them in a green and sustainable manner.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday ahead of the upcoming Laos' National Arbor Day, Linkham emphasized that forests are essential to the country's socio-economic development.
He noted that forests help preserve soil, water, and biodiversity, mitigate the effects of climate change, and support key sectors such as infrastructure, agriculture, energy, and rural livelihoods.
Sustainable forest management also plays a crucial role in reducing poverty among ethnic communities, the local Pasaxon newspaper reported on Wednesday.
Laos' National Arbor Day, observed on June 1, aims to raise public awareness, especially among youth, about the importance of forests and their sustainable use.
The Lao government has prioritized forest management through policies and regulations aligned with national development goals.
To mark the National Arbor Day in 2025, tree planting ceremonies will take place across the country, covering about 1,600 hectares with more than 997,000 seedlings.
The ministry is encouraging all public and private sectors, as well as communities across the country, to take part in tree-planting activities based on local conditions. Citizens are also urged to contribute to forest conservation and reforestation efforts, helping ensure that forest resources remain a vital and sustainable part of Laos' national development. Enditem
