RIO DE JANEIRO, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Defender Guga scored a stunning late goal as Fluminense recovered from an early deficit to secure a 2-1 home win over Vasco da Gama in Brazil's Serie A on Saturday.
Joao Victor gave Vasco the lead at the Maracana Stadium with a 25th-minute header following Lucas Piton's free-kick from the right flank.
But Vasco gifted the hosts an equalizer when goalkeeper Leonardo Jardim parried away Vinicius Lima's goal-bound header only for the ball to rebound in off Pablo Vegetti's chest.
Guga completed the turnaround with a rising 30-yard drive into the far corner that left Jardim with no chance.
The result leaves Fluminense fifth in the 20-team standings with 17 points, five behind leader Palmeiras. Vasco is 13th, seven points further back.
"We were the better team in all areas," Fluminense manager Renato Gaucho told a post-match news conference. "We deserve these three points for our commitment, dedication and for how our players were able to deliver when it mattered most."
In other Brazilian top-flight fixtures on Saturday, Mirassol won 2-0 at Sao Paulo, and Atletico Mineiro was held to a goalless home draw by Corinthians. Enditem
