BRUSSELS, May 27 (Xinhua) -- European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday condemned Israel's intensified strikes in Gaza as "abhorrent" and urged an immediate end to the blockade to allow aid to flow.
"The expansion of Israel's military operations in Gaza targeting civilian infrastructure, among them a school that served as a shelter for displaced Palestinian families, killing civilians, including children, is abhorrent," von der Leyen said during a phone call with Jordan's King Abdullah II.
She demanded that Israel lift the blockade and restore aid deliveries "in line with humanitarian principles," with the participation of the United Nations and other international partners.
Von der Leyen stressed that the "escalation and disproportionate use of force against civilians cannot be justified under humanitarian and international law," even if Israel has the right to security and self-defence.
"Europe's commitment to a just, comprehensive and lasting peace based on a two-state solution remains unwavering," she added. Enditem
