BUENOS AIRES, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Three-time Copa Libertadores champion Juan Ramon Veron has died aged 81, his former club Estudiantes said on Tuesday.
Veron was a key player in the Estudiantes team that won consecutive Libertadores titles in 1968, 1969 and 1970, an Argentine league title in 1967 and the Inter-American Cup in 1969.
Known as La Bruja, Veron scored against Manchester United at Old Trafford to help Estudiantes win the 1968 Intercontinental Cup.
"Estudiantes announces with deep sorrow the passing of Juan Ramon Veron, an undisputed icon of our history, an absolute reference point for our identity and an eternal symbol of commitment, humility and belonging," the club said in a statement.
The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) also paid tribute to the former forward.
"CONMEBOL deeply regrets the passing of Juan Ramon Veron ... a legend of South American football," the entity said in a social media post.
Veron, who was capped four times for Argentina's national team, also had spells at Colombian clubs Junior Barranquilla and Cucuta Deportiva, as well as Greece's Panathinaikos.
His son, former Argentina and Manchester United midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron, also played for Estudiantes and is currently the club's president. Enditem
