COLOMBO, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan security forces have arrested 11 individuals and seized more than 600 kilograms of heroin and crystal methamphetamine, the navy said in a statement on Wednesday.

According to the navy, two local fishing trawlers used to smuggle the drugs were also confiscated.

The seizure took place during a joint operation involving the navy, the State Intelligence Service and the Police Narcotics Bureau, the navy said.

The navy said that both the drugs and the trawlers were brought to the Dikovita Fisheries Harbor in southern Sri Lanka on Wednesday.

Deputy Minister of Defense Aruna Jayasekara, who inspected the seized drugs along with the commander of the navy and the acting inspector general of police, said that strict legal action would be taken against all those involved in drug trafficking, in an effort to build a drug-free society.

The navy added that the confiscated drugs, suspects and multi-day fishing trawlers will be handed over to the Police Narcotic Bureau for further legal proceedings.

In recent months, Sri Lankan police have confiscated large quantities of illegal drugs as part of the government's ongoing campaign to combat the drug menace. Enditem
