YAOUNDE, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Cameroonian Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute said on Friday that peace and stability are gradually returning to the country's Anglophone regions of Northwest and Southwest, where an armed separatist conflict has been in progress since 2017.
"Thanks to the efforts made on the socioeconomic and security fronts, peace is gradually returning to those regions. Life is gradually returning to normalcy in the villages and towns of the Northwest and Southwest regions with the unwavering support of the populations and various stakeholders," Ngute said in Buea, the chief town of the Southwest Region.
Although peace in the regions remains fragile, the government is working with local and international partners to rebuild structures ravaged by the conflict and ensure lasting peace, he said, while chairing the sixth session of the Steering Committee of the Presidential Plan for the Reconstruction and Development of the Northwest and Southwest Regions.
"The state will continue to make significant financial contributions," Ngute said, calling for more support from friendly countries and international partners.
Separatist fighters have been clashing with government forces since 2017 in a bid to create an independent nation in the two English-speaking regions. Enditem
