KABUL, June 1 (Xinhua) -- The Afghan interim government's Ministry of Mines and Petroleum signed a contract with a Turkish company to extract gas from three newly identified wells in northern Jawzjan province, the ministry said Saturday.

The contract, worth 8 million U.S. dollars, was signed on Saturday by Acting Minister of Mines and Petroleum Mullah Hedayatullah Badri and an official of the company at a ceremony held in Kabul, the ministry posted on its social media X account.

The company will drill three wells within one year in the Yatim Taq area, Jawzjan province. Once completed, the project is expected to yield 100,000 cubic meters of gas per day, it said.

This initiative not only aims to boost domestic energy resources but also to support economic development through job creation, it added.

Since assuming power in August 2021, the Afghan interim government has signed a series of contracts with domestic and international companies to extract the country's natural resources. Enditem
