Historical site in Afghanistan reveals Kushan, Mughal era traces

KABUL, June 2 (Xinhua) -- A new historical site has been unveiled in eastern Afghanistan's Nangarhar province, bearing traces of both the Mughal and Kushan empires, the country's Ministry of Information and Culture said in a statement on Monday.

Shedding new light on the region's rich cultural and historical heritage, the site discovered in the Torkham area lies 597 meters above sea level and was mapped using satellite coordinates, the ministry cited Mawlawi Zabihullah Noorani, provincial director of information and culture, as saying.

Traces of artifacts from the Mughal era and the Kushan civilization have been uncovered in this area, indicating the site's rich and layered historical past, said the official.

Authorities plan to dispatch a specialized archaeological team to conduct further investigation and formally register the site as a protected historical location of the ministry, Noorani explained.

Afghanistan has long been a crossroads of civilizations, including the Kushan Empire and the Mughal period, with its strategic location linking South Asia, Central Asia and the Middle East. Enditem
