RIGA, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Latvia's population declined to 1.86 million at the beginning of 2025, marking a 1 percent drop, or 18,400 fewer people, compared to the previous year, the Baltic country's national statistics office reported Monday.

The population decrease was primarily driven by natural decline, as deaths outnumbered births, accounting for a 0.7 percent reduction. Meanwhile, more people emigrated from Latvia than immigrated in, leading to a further 0.3 percent decrease.

At the end of 2024, the share of working-age people (15 to 64 years) was 63 percent, down 1 percent from 2023, while the percentage of seniors (65 years and older) made up 21.9 percent of the population, a rise of 0.5 percent year-on-year.

Children aged 14 years old or younger made up 15.1 percent of the population, a slight decline of 0.3 percent compared to the previous year, the statistics office said. Enditem
