DAMASCUS, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Syria's General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport announced Monday that Emirates airline, the flagship carrier of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Flynas, a Saudi low-cost airline, will soon launch direct commercial flights to Damascus, Syria's state-run SANA news agency reported.
According to the authority, Emirates airline is scheduled to resume flights to Damascus International Airport starting July 16, ending a 13-year suspension. Flynas is expected to begin operations in the coming days, with the airline stating on its website that direct flights between Riyadh and Damascus will commence on Thursday.
The authority described the return of Emirates airline as a significant step that could encourage other airlines to resume or initiate services to Damascus. It added that the move is expected to boost commercial and economic activity, promote tourism, and facilitate travel for Syrians, particularly those from the large expatriate community in the UAE.
The authority also noted that it has intensified efforts to rehabilitate Damascus International Airport through restoration, infrastructure development, and staff training, aiming to meet international standards for airline operations.
On Sunday, a flight operated by Dubai-based budget carrier Flydubai landed at Damascus International Airport, marking the resumption of direct commercial flights between the UAE and Syria after a years-long hiatus. Enditem
