JERUSALEM, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Israel launched its first national energy institute on Tuesday, aiming to drive innovation in renewable energy and energy storage and support the country's shift toward a cleaner economy, according to a statement issued by the Israeli Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure.
The institute, located on the Bar-Ilan University campus near Tel Aviv, is backed by a 130 million shekel (about 36.8 million U.S. dollars) investment and was established jointly with the Israel Institute of Technology.
According to the ministry, the new center will focus on developing advanced energy technologies and serve as a hub for startup companies.
It aims to build innovative research infrastructure, train the next generation of energy experts, and support companies throughout the innovation pipeline, from early research to commercial deployment.
A key focus will be on energy storage and advanced fuel cell technologies, with research aiming to improve safety, efficiency, and scalability.
Projects already underway include the development of cost-effective sodium-ion batteries and the recycling of lithium-ion batteries, which are central to renewable energy storage.
Israel's Energy Minister, Eli Cohen, said at the launch event that the initiative reflects Israel's commitment to leveraging its strengths in innovation and entrepreneurship to meet its goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. Enditem
