ANKARA, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Turkish lawmakers on Tuesday re-elected Numan Kurtulmus, a senior member of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), as speaker of parliament.

Kurtulmus, a deputy representing Istanbul, secured 329 votes in the third round of voting, comfortably surpassing the 301 votes needed for an absolute majority.

He will serve a three-year term, unless early elections are called.

Candidates from five political parties with parliamentary groups contested the speakership. The AKP's nationalist ally, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), did not field a candidate and threw its support behind Kurtulmus.

In remarks to lawmakers following his re-election, Kurtulmus called for national unity in the fight against terrorism. "We agree that establishing a terror-free Türkiye is the most urgent issue before us," he said.

He also reiterated calls for a new constitution, describing it as a duty to future generations. "Our responsibility is to crown the second century of our Republic with a civilian, democratic, participatory, and inclusive constitution," he said. Enditem
