NEW DELHI, June 20 (Xinhua) -- At least nine people were killed Friday after a car they were traveling in collided head-on with a truck in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, police said.

The accident took place near Namshol in the Balarampur police station area in Purulia district, about 284 km west of Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal.

A car collided head-on with a speeding truck on National Highway 18 near Namshol in the Balarampur police station area, killing all nine occupants inside the car, a police officer said, adding all the victims were immediately taken to the nearest health facility, where doctors declared them dead.

According to police, the victims were returning from a wedding ceremony in the adjacent Jharkhand state.

The vehicle was severely damaged due to the collision.

Preliminary investigations showed that the car lost control and rammed into the truck that was heading in the opposite direction.

Deadly road accidents are common in India due to overloading, bad roads and reckless driving.

Last year, over 480,000 road accidents were recorded in the country. Enditem
