TOKYO -- Typhoon Nari crossed the Hokkaido coast on Tuesday, the first landfall by a typhoon on Japan's northern main island since 2016, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
The fifth typhoon of the year made landfall near Cape Erimo at the southern tip of Hokkaido at around 2 a.m. local time, also marking the first to make landfall in Hokkaido during July since records began in 1951, the weather agency said. (Japan-Typhoon)

MACAO -- The Electoral Affairs Commission for the Legislative Assembly Election of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) announced on Tuesday that 12 candidates from two electoral lists are not qualified for the election due to failing to uphold the Basic Law and bear allegiance to the Macao SAR.
Seng Ioi Man, chairman of the commission, noted at a press conference that the decision was made in accordance with the Electoral Law for the Legislative Assembly and based on the opinions sent by the Macao SAR Committee for Safeguarding National Security on Monday. NEW DELHI -- At least 21 people were killed and many others suffered injuries in lightning strikes in India's eastern Jharkhand and Bihar states during the past 48 hours, officials said Tuesday.
According to officials, the majority of the victims were working in their fields when the lightning struck them. While 12 deaths were reported in Jharkhand, nine have been reported from the neighbouring Bihar. (India-Lightning Deaths)

SEOUL -- South Korea on Tuesday protested at Japan's renewed territorial claims to the disputed islets lying halfway between the two countries, called Dokdo by South Korea and Takeshima by Japan.
The South Korean foreign ministry said in a statement that the government strongly protests at the Japanese government's repetition of unjust sovereignty claims over Dokdo, which is clearly an integral part of the South Korean territory historically, geographically and under international law. JAKARTA -- A rescue team in Indonesia's Mentawai Islands said on Tuesday that 17 people have been found alive after a boat capsized in the Sipora Strait, West Sumatra, on Monday.
According to a preliminary report, the speedboat, carrying 18 passengers, including several children, departed from Sikakap Island at around 8 a.m. local time and capsized at around 11 a.m. during its journey to Sipora Island amid severe weather conditions. (Indonesia-Sea Accident) Enditem
