NEW DELHI, July 28 (Xinhua) -- At least two people were killed and 29 others injured early Monday in a stampede at a temple in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said.
The stampede broke out at around 2:00 a.m. local time after an electric wire snapped and fell on a tin shed at Awsaneshwar Mahadev Temple in Barabanki district, about 50 km east of Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.
According to District Magistrate Shashank Tripathi, the overhead electric wire snapped after some monkeys jumped onto it when there was a huge rush of devotees.
"In today's stampede at the Awsaneshwar Mahadev Temple because of the snapping of an electric wire, two people were killed and 29 others suffered injuries," a police official said. "The injured were immediately removed to Haidergarh and Trivediganj Community Health Centre. The critically injured were rushed to the district hospital." Enditem
