BERLIN, July 28 (Xinhua) -- German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Monday urged a comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza and said that Germany would immediately launch a humanitarian aid airlift.
The announcement came after a meeting of the government's security cabinet.
Germany will launch an airlift of humanitarian goods over Gaza in cooperation with Jordan, and in close coordination with France and Britain, Merz said in a press statement.
When asked about potential pressure on Israel, such as sanctions or a halt to arms deliveries, Merz said no such decisions had been made but stated that Germany reserves the right to take such steps.
Israel must immediately and comprehensively improve the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza, Merz said, stressing that there must be no further expulsions from the Gaza Strip.
Hamas must immediately release all hostages and clear the way for a ceasefire, he also said. Enditem
