SANAA, July 28 (Xinhua) -- A woman was killed in a landmine explosion in Yemen's Hodeidah port city, local medics told Xinhua late Monday.
The incident occurred on Monday evening when the woman was collecting firewood in the al-Hali district, southwest of Hodeidah, and stepped onto the mine, they said.
The Houthi armed group has maintained control over much of northern Yemen, including Hodeidah province and the capital Sanaa, since a civil war erupted in late 2014. The conflict has created a complex web of competing authorities, with the internationally-recognized government operating from Aden.
In December 2018, a UN-brokered ceasefire deal called the Hudaydah Agreement was reached between the Houthi group and the internationally-recognized government. But incidents caused by landmines and unexploded ordnance have continued to take place from time to time.
According to the UN Mission to support the Hudaydah Agreement, mines and explosive remnants of war in Hodeidah province killed 41 civilians and wounded 52 others throughout 2024. Enditem
